A Biblical Theology of Singleness

This little booklet was the first the published synopsis of my biblical theology of singleness that was the result of several years of reflection. Much of the initial work was the result of a series of retreat talks I shared with the single adults of College Church of Wheaton in 2004. Helpful feedback spurred further thought and development that culminated with the material in this booklet. The Grove series is produced by Ridley Hall in Cambridge for the primary benefit of Anglican clergy members, but written at a level very accessible to those at all levels of biblical training.

The booklets can be ordered here.

Paul and Secular Singleness in 1 Corinthians 7

Paul’s discussion of marriage and singleness in 1 Corinthians 7 has been challenging to interpret, especially with the chapter’s opening statement: “It is good for a man not to touch a woman.” Scholars debate whether this reflects Paul’s views or the Corinthians’ beliefs and what sparked an ascetic movement in Corinth. In his study, Barry N. Danylak offers a new take by showing that secular singleness was common in Roman cities, based on evidence from Egyptian census records. He also argues that the Corinthians likely had an Epicurean view of singleness, and that Paul used the “touch” language as a rhetorical response to their question. Danylak’s work offers a fresh solution to these ongoing debates.

In this week’s Everyday Conversations Podcast, Amy talks with Reverend Dr. Barry Danylak about singleness and the Christian worldview. In today’s world sexual expression is considered nearly an absolute right and any restriction on sexual freedom is viewed as repressive. Barry talks about the goodness of the Christian sexual ethic which recognizes the supremacy of God and the goodness of submitting to his authority in the area of sexuality. Following God’s design of chastity for the unmarried gives the Christian a means of expressing devotion to our Creator rather than unbridled sexual expression as the true mark of humanity.
